Ms. Hazel, with her post Flea Market Supper, on her blog: Celebrations 101.

I believe that that is one healthy dish right there! I have always been intrigued by Thai dishes, but never got to try them much because my family seldom chooses Thai food (Japanese food always wins, lol0. You've got to check out this post by Ms. Hazel and see what other goodies they had that night!

This week is another round of restaurant food for me, while we were in Davao ... hopefully, the last for this month. lol.

We decided to check out Marina Tuna that day for lunch, at their SM Lanang (Davao City) branch.

The Tuna Tinola was comforting and reminded me of the fish tinola that my parents used to cook for us  (yes, they both cooked when they were not too busy) when we were still kids. The fried chicken was also delicious, as well as the salmon sashimi (it was a bit expensive compared to the ones that we order here in Quezon City). But what really got my attention was the Tuna with Bitter Gourd - I just loved it! Simple dish, but big on taste. In my honest opinion. :)

ps. I am already a bitter gourd fan, so ... :D

This week's feature is (again) another food trip while we were in Davao. It was a special occasion, so we went to this restaurant named the Tiny Kitchen. It is a Spanish-inspired restaurant, which also offers cakes and pastries. We had these:

The food was delicious! Service was wonderful, too. None of those holier-than-thou waiters and waitresses. lol. Though I must admit, I find their paella negra a bit lacking - in quantity! :D

All in all, a lovely place to take family and friends. Or business associates. :P

My post for this week is something that we had along the road while in Davao (Philippines). This was a place that was frequented by travelers and the area was known for their hito (catfish) dishes. I believe they even have their own catfish ponds located near their restaurant. I definitely saw some fish ponds while we were on the road...

Nothing fancy, definitely. It was one of those eateries where you can even eat with your bare hands, though of course, spoons and forks are always available. No knives, unless maybe if you ask for it. :P

We had their fried hito/catfish, chicken tinola with malunggay, porkchops (had it chopped), rice, and of course...durian! :P

The catfish was really crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside..it was fresh and good! I think I could have eaten the whole fish all by myself! lol. The chicken tinola was a bit tough (they used native chicken, apparently) but the soup was delicious - perfect paired with the other fried dishes. They also gave each of us our own dipping saucers with diced red onions and green tomatoes, whole bird's eye chilis, cucumber slices, and calamansi/calamondin. Soy sauce, coconut vinegar, salt, pepper, and ketchup were also available.

Everything was served piping hot (except for the durian), which made up for the ten (or was it fifteen?) minutes wait. :)

I would eat there again, if given the opportunity. But this time, I'll just maybe go for the catfish dish. And the durian. :P

Look who went with us on our vacation! :)

... Danbo riding the fastcraft. So loving his background (and missing it); specially with that line of clouds out there. Lucky we got a window seat! :D

Ms. Dominique, with her post Pickles and Dim Sum on a Friday, on her blog: From Dominique's Desk.

I must admit, I haven't tasted chicken legs yet. My father likes it, though, as well as some uncles. But we all love dim sum! Do click on the shot above to see the story behind Ms. Dominique's post!

May is fiesta month around here (am still in the province right now), and of course we just had to attend one! My mother's hometown is around two hours (or two and a half, if your vehicle isn't in a hurry) from us and when we were young we used to go there during summer. Always. We loved going to the beach early mornings (we were sometimes awakened by the sound of the big waves back then) and play on the fine black sand. The Pacific Ocean can be quite daunting with the big waves, but most of the time I was brave. lol.

Two days ago we attended the town fiesta, but we didn't get to visit the beach because it rained. Everything was still more or less the same like it was before (back when I was younger and my cousins, siblings, and I used to run around,  with sand clinging to our sweaty bodies, but having the time of our lives). The original houses are gone now, but a cousin decided to have a "summer house" (as we all fondly called it) constructed where we briefly stayed.

The food during a fiesta isn't really all about the taste, but mostly about the quantity. Just look at some of the shots above - big pots! Most of my cousins opted to cook a few of the dishes themselves, but have most of the food cooked by a caterer. In their area, the lechon (roasted pig - no sauce required!) is a mainstay (we brought it with us - yes, the skin was no longer as crispy when we arrived; still, it tasted good!), together with the boiled gabi (taro) or maybe some sweet potatoes. I guess this is where I first learned that I love lechon eaten together with simply boiled taro or sweet potato. My eldest - and even hubby - thinks it's weird. :)

There were other dishes being served, but I failed to take pictures. The beef steak was requested by my son since he just loved it the first time he tasted his uncle's (my cousin's) beef steak. I was mostly too busy eating and talking since I rarely see them! lol. All in all, it was another wonderful day. I loved seeing them again and reminiscing ... sad that some of them are no longer with us, but happy that we got the chance to see each other again after a long time. :)

Mr. Nicholas V. with his post Pumpkin Risotto, on his site: Intelliblog.

Love the presentation! We have squash in abundance around here ... am thinking maybe squash can be used instead of pumpkin for this particular dish. Or maybe am wrong; I haven't tried pumpkin yet. lol. But do click on the shot above to see how Mr. Nicholas did his lovely Pumpkin Risotto!

We stayed quite a while in Davao City and there were times that we (the kids and I) decided not to go out and do some exploring (weird, huh!), so what we usually do is avail room service and have our food delivered. These are some of the dishes that we tried:

The dishes were good and priced reasonably; loved the servings - they were more than what I am used to! lol. The kids and I enjoyed eating, sitting on the bed (something which we never do at home), while watching tv. Of course, we also had plain steamed rice, juice, and bottled water. The meal was wonderful, but what made it great was that my sons and I still enjoyed that day, even if we decided not to go out. :)

Ms. Iska, with her post: Tuyo Fried Rice, on her blog, ISKAndals.com

I have heard of this dish but never tried it myself. I LOVE (can never emphasize it enough, lol) tuyo (dried salted fish) so I just know that this is a dish that I know I must try making myself! Hopefully, soon. If you want to know Ms. Iska's version, then do click  the shot above.

This was one of the restaurants that we went to, while in Davao City (Philippines): (The Original) Conching's Native Chicken and Fastfood. I believe that this is a branch of a similarly named restaurant in Cebu, which is well known for their unique barbecued native chicken, imbao (clam), and "puso" (rice cooked in a pouch made from coconut leaves). I couldn't resist trying their moist chocolate cake and crab relleno, too. :P

What we had, together with plain steamed white rice (their brown rice "puso" wasn't available yet), bottled water, and pineapple juice:

I must admit: their barbecued native chicken tastes different. I mean that in a good way, since aside from the usual lemongrass and spring onions they also added other herbs inside the chicken's cavity; which is somehow familiar but I just can't name (... maybe anise? or rosemary?!). The chicken was tender, too. But what I really loved that night was the clam soup - so similar to what we used to have at least once a week, back home. My mom prefers a different type of bivalves, though. Forgot the name, but the soup tastes the same.

The crab relleno and the moist chocolate cake wasn't that great, though. Something was lacking in both. Maybe I should have tried their grilled squid or their kinilaw (tuna "cooked" in vinegar), instead. Next time ... :)
