That's
crispy tawilis (a freshwater sardine found only here in the Philippines; how it became a "freshwater" sardine? Well, to make a long story short ... their ancestors were trapped in Taal Lake (which was then only an extension of Balayan Bay) when the lake got closed off after Taal Volcano erupted a couple of times.
Click here if you want to know more...). I believe there used to be sharks in Taal Lake, too, but there are none right now. Would you believe there are even said to be water snakes there that resemble the poisonous two colored snakes of the sea? But I am deviating from the topic. LOL
Something as simple as this dish is already heaven for me (soul food). I could eat that as is, or with a plate of hot steaming rice. :))
